Sage,
This one got to me on a pesonal level. The name of my memoir is . . AND THE WHIPPOORWILL SANG, and it played a part in my book and as a tagline. The whippoorwill, legend has it, helps a departing soul on its way to heaven. It was my daughter's favorite bird--I like to think it helped her home as well. Is this classic Haiku? It's one of your best short poems--so much said is so few words!!

Somewhat like a soul rising into the cosmos, free and finally saved.
"I'm So lonesome I could Cry" orginally by Johnny Cash comes to mind when I read this lovely poem.

Personally I can relate to the song and your poem...
