To My Sister At Sixty_______________
A long time ago, we grew up in the Brooklyn Project streets.
We walked through the 50’s and 60’s, to the New York City beat.
We often laughed at our childhood; for the Boink and Blondie, the days flew by fast.
Good times came and went; we had bad times but bad times didn’t last.
As an older sister, you were there for me most all of the time.
You made my world much brighter and became a friend of mine.
Some say we had it tough, growing up in the projects and all.
But we laughed our way through our sorrows and sometimes we had a ball.
So through all of the seasons and years, we made the best of it all with few tears.
The De Angelo’s were our best friend’s way back then.
Their legacy goes on; some things never seem to end!
We played many games though the 50’s and we strived to be our best.
We learned how to be Catholic, but we did not always pass the test.
I wore bell bottoms, you had a bee hive, we hula hooped and danced.
We played lots of music on our 45’s whenever we had a chance.
We played songs by The Beatles, Elvis, Sinatra and Dion.
Those rock songs on the radio; we could listen to them all night long.
Then in the middle 1960’s the world around us really went to pot.
We were in our teens, we grew up fast, and things got pretty hot.
You went one way and I went another, but we both moved forward from the past.
We tried to make the best of it all, but we knew our youth would not last.
Now we are grown up in our sixties and we are getting older every day.
We did all right Sis! We rose above it all. Thank God, we finally found our way.
LOVE,
JOHNNY

This is thoughtful, sweet in the best sense and wonderfully evocative, a fine birthday gift indeed.

This poem takes me back. I have 3 sisters and we also grew up in the 60's and 70's. My, how times have changed since those days. In some ways I wish we could get those days back!
Blessings and love,
