All people desire to be free. So do the smallest of creatures. A fly buzzing inside a house is just looking for a way out to be free again. When you think about it we are no different except we can get out if we really want to. This is freedom that goes far beyond the 4th of July. It's freedom that endures the test of time.

Very interesting poem. To my recently accquired knowledge of Japanese poetry (wikipedia haha), this could qualify as both a haiku as well as a senryu. You see, it has an image of nature (haiku), but at the same time it portrays the imperfection of man (senryu), while a haiku, as I understood, reflects upon the perfection (in nature). Because the only image of nature portrayed here is the fly, and the imperfection is much more apparent, about the wanting freedom and all, I would judge this a senryu. In my most humble opinion ofcourse. Very nice and down-to-earth poem, I like it. Greetings, D.T.

Ha! Ha! Ha! I could not stop laughing at your response Ron. That is because in my teens and twenties I would have said the same thing! However, now I know even the absence of a bee can mess up our whole food chain and cause starvation in much of the world. There is a delicate balance in nature and if we don't respect it we will become victims of our own demise. Still, I loved your humor. I will leave it at that.
If I were a Buddhist, I'd give him some meat to draw blood on and lay his or her eggs on, to get maggots, then I let them feed, so I'd have a house full of flies that I would shoo out of an open window gently with a saffron orange cloth.
But I'm an ignorant atheist, so I just would swat the fly dead, sweep it up and deposit it in the trash, where all good varmints go after I kill them.
