Dimensionality Collapse

by Debashish Haar — Read all 156 poems by Debashish Haar

Saturday, October 29, 2005

Each night an innocent moon walks down
to drink from a lake.
Each night it dies, crossing
the whirlpool of its shades.

At dawn, when the lake disappears,
sand and wind meet
to ration Sun’s rage-broken sip.

And then the wind sculpts a mountain
with trees, streams and fountain;
and sand sculpts the wind
as water flows upstream.

The mountain is an Escher
with trees, monkeys and birds.
Wind’s the master of this circus.

You have intriguing titles, Calvin Hobbes, but this is the one I chose to read. To my delight.

'Walks, dies, disappears', all pertinent to dimensional relativity...

Ah, but what comes next? Wind 'sculpts', like an artist, 'sand flows upstream', like a creator. Escher 'rebuilds' monumental perceptions, like a divine human, like a god.

Wind is Time.

With respect,

More than likely I am reading too much into DIMENSIONALITY COLLAPSE but in these lines I see a haunting enigmatic parable of self-contained integrity and beauty attempting to stand its ground, or command its own space, within a reality where such qualities are sometimes carelessly, or even brutally, destroyed. However, the shining unnamed angelic presence in this poem-parable is the power of creativity capable of absorbing and transforming even the furious authority of the wind. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
