The Unknowns

by Debashish Haar — Read all 156 poems by Debashish Haar

The little boy slays dragons and kisses fairies;
the adolescent learns to make stories;
the callow youth, aware of the world,
has no experience;
the man, blinded by the high walls
where light is a sleepwalking memory.

At 28 I am not a callow youth, nor a veteran.
My mind is no longer as wild as the clouds,
or as still as the caged water in a frozen lake.
I am walking ahead in my own awareness,
which is hollow at places, to allow thoughts
to thunder inside and shake me above myself.
Being fed up of walking the tightrope
of barriers, between images and mirages,
I am keeping eyes where mind can focus.

In these years I read about places,
seen cities crumble, names inseminated
in test tubes and sugar cubes,
nourished by blood and consecrated in oil.
Tried to read and comprehend
the holy texts, though a believer
in science and facts, all what I found
were opinions from various powers.
They marketed their gods
in their own interests.

The fair and the weak have suffered.
Some were burnt as Sati and
some veiled for centuries and
some as witches.
In this metallic world
womanhood is fantasized
in steel bras and leather panties;
gloss and veneer traded
to enamel the ever-growing nails
raising the barbarians, Hitlers and Mussolinis.
Those who connived with Goebbels
to secure their futures
are present, even today;
they are unknown to themselves.

A very sensitive poem by someone who feels deeply about the world around him. Lots of scope in the future. It is alays good to go back to a poem, polish and burnish it until it shines and glows. I fervently hope you have the time to do this, Debashish.

mankind creates its own reality ... the purpose of barbarians is for humanity to evolve beyond its primitive nature by experiencing the horror and deceit instilled within it ... in time humankind will learn to realize its true nature ... as creators not destroyers ... i realize this poem goes into other directions but that's how this poem inspired me to react ...

You have painted a comprehensive picture of awareness here, Debs... but still the quest will go on, no? Knowledge and understanding in itself will not satisfy... ultimately there is, I think, a "faith window" that is continually open and searching the heavens. In my experience faith cannot be rationalised or reasoned, yet, whenever I act upon it, it becomes solid ground beneath my feet; understanding and appreciation comes retrospectively. God, if one chooses to believe in a Higher Deity, is, of course beyond our comprehension and remains Unknown in the sense that we cannot "box Him up"; yet I believe He chooses to manifest and to reveal Himself to the sincere seeker. But it is usually "outside" of the rational mind and is instead in an "inner" more intimate place. And I guess that whenever "mere" humans seek to interpret God, we each put our own "gloss" on it/Him. Have already said too much, but this is a well-constructed piece which is so far-reaching - both outwards and inwards - and yet loses energy nowhere inspite of all the ground it covers. Fascinating imagery and details you have picked to encapsulate your journey. TY Kate xx

"Each of them marketed their gods
in their own interests."

To me, this message is central to the piece you've written.

Dear Debashish,
We can free ourselves from those who wish to oppress us and keep us from The Light, if we only have the courage.

"I am walking ahead in my own awareness,
which is hollow at places, to allow thoughts
to thunder inside and shake me above myself." <- this is enlightenment!

Love & Light,
Joseph

Dear Debashish: I cannot say, of all those I have met, always leaning, educated and oriented one way or the other upon passed upon facts of scholars, scientists, theologans, that any had thoughts of challange, doubt, self constructed ideals or awareness transcending the accepted and contemporary to live their existences with the awareness that change is always slow, that their lives encompass a very miniscule period of time, and that they are not at an exact climax, revelation-is commonality to all-this is always from within each person, the distributions of nature and economies always occupies the majorities -there is no absolute truth but in the passage of time. It is a shame when the world is perceived so small, that the imaginations of men suffer more darkness than light. Enjoyed your poem greatly.

Extraordinary poetry D! Though I agree with most of what you say, there is a factor left out that can change everything. Something that cannot be found in books. It is a Spirit that indwells those who believe in Creator!

Eileen

When we only see the tangible and that which fits into our mind as comprehensible It reminds me of the doubting Thomas who had to see before he belived. Very few will be persuaded by God in this manner.
