Edge

by Debashish Haar — Read all 156 poems by Debashish Haar

Sunday, February 19, 2006

It’s 2:30 am, walking on the terrace:
I see me ricochet against the edge
of an open window on the fourth floor.
I feel a strange numbness: a speck of ash
scatters, the end left to fall:
tumble and swing in mid air.
There’s no spark as the stub hits the ground.
I begin each day at 7:00 am
somewhere near the spot
where the stub hit the ground.

Amid the fuzz and the static of sleeplessness there is a sense of movement even if we are standing still. Illusions and apparitions catch our thoughts and pull us into their surreal spaces leaving us to wonder if we are asleep or dreaming while awake. This is a great poem, Debs.
Take care,

Don't like those moments when you feel like you're falling and it's only part of a bad dream.

Very surreal and a vivid and accurate account of extreme fatigue... at least, in my interpretation. The drowsiness that alcohol can bring can also make for these heightened awarenesses amidst the stupor, but you have described excellently here those sharp and intense moments that pierce through the mind when all else seems to be dulled and losing consciousness. I very much like this microcosm, Debs... even if I am totally barking up the wrong tree! Excellent sharp-focussed "dream within the dream" write. TY Kate xx
