Heat unrelenting, baking sun
Pushing up temperatures
Sending tempers aflame
Drying grass to brown crisps.
Air grows heavy
With windblown dust
The only green seen
Is by the irrigation sprinklers
Cooked concrete
Sends ripples of heat
Skyward
From looking glass pools
On the highway ahead.
The breeze teases
The trees
As it sends gusts
Of sun-scorched air
Through the leaves
Taunting imaginary coolness.
Semi-dehydrated tourists
Pause at rest stops
Carrying cool drinks
One and all
Their skin warm and pink
Glistened with
Escaping moisture.
Ahhh! Summer fun under the sun
Composed on a recent trip over the Blue Mountains from Washington to Idaho when the temperature was 107 degrees
