I bought my own flowers today
again
glad for my flower man
he comes bearing beautiful flowers
of all sorts
and even if I have no cash
he smiles and hands me extra bundles
why
I have no clue
maybe because I’m a steady eddie
maybe it’s the wistful look in my eye
that says
I want these flowers to take me away
I want them on my desk so that I can dream
of fields laden in their glory
so I can smell in their fragrance
created especially for me
or maybe just because
I’m nice to him
he’s my friend
I know about his life
how hard he struggles
peddling flowers
how I worry if he doesn’t show up
on schedule
funny
when I first started buying my own flowers
I felt guilt
extra money out the window
now I know they are a gift
a deserved gift
to myself
to my friend
who takes my smiles and runs
and I swear to god I’ll collect coke cans
to keep him in business
