dark country road
baby at the wheel
music on
I’m relaxed two margaritas
she’s doing just fine
and my mind is wandering
staring at the moon
catching the jagged edge of the cliffs
and in a flash
my eyes are on the road
two full size raccoons
she screams
swerves
hits
I’m reaching for the wheel
we’re on the wrong side of the road
it was a flash really
just a blink
she’s a wreck
I say
two things
you gotta remember two things
one that was not your fault
these things happen
it was their time
two never swerve for animals
unless it’s deer or cows
they might win
but
we were on the Other side of the road
not good
are you ok
and she nods and whimpers
steals a look at me
are you mad
no
if we were dead I would be mad
I would be really pissed
not so much for me
but for you
you gots lots to do babe
and your life is far more important
far far more
two minutes later we’re home
can I lay with you
and I smile
as we crawl up in my bed
life is like
that
flashes
critters in the road
in a heartbeat
everything changes
my baby saw that felt the thumps
took the blame
broke
my
heart
and bent the hell out of my license plate

I hope she is feeling better now, things like that happen.
I know she does good driving, but she has to take it all
in stride. Loved it, Mom

I have to dodge hundreds of ducks on the lake each time I drive in or out of our subdivision. Little fellers are so used to cars and people, they walk right up to you.

Good one, Josie.

karla neglected to say that she also hit a squirrel w hile we were heading towards cedar point, a huge amusement park. glad you are okay, but it is still upsetting when you run over an innocent animal that has a tendency to sneak up on unsuspecting drivers (especially at night!). good write, josie! love, your friend, karen lynn in texas.
