my kingdom for a skate

tossing
and I’m dreaming I am tom hanks
and I am
marooned and my tooth hurts
and
I’m opening boxes to find a skate
so
I can knock the sucker out
reality
awake at 4 am
hand to my face says
this is not a dream
your cheek is swollen hon
and I run
to the bathroom
flip a switch
and stare
at a swollen angry gum
traitor
I am the hater
of dentist’s
refuse
to submit to the abuse
of their instruments
refuse
to let them tinker in my mouth
and
now
this
there is no choice
there are no options
I know this one
he’ll put you to sleep
wake up
all done
but that somehow seems
cowardly
when I should be aware awake
hands grasping chair
eyes watering pain
some chick sucking out my spittle
with a miniature vacuum
gagging o the gagging
I deserve this I know
maintenance
is the key
to tooth longevity
a person could
DIE
from a mouth infection
so
stocked full of Tylenol
I await
the dreaded hour
when
all good dentists
flip over the sign that says
open
let all enter here
bring your fear
while they rub together hands
that will fix this
wretched
pain

anybody got a skate?????
