The Dublin Township Poor House sat on the crest of the hill.
Large galvanized metal tubes clutched its stone walls
Like the limbs of a giant bug,
Sliding-board fire escapes for the elderly residents.
From their high-back wooden chairs, gray-haired people
Watched the inevitable advance of row after row of new houses,
Slowly marching across the open farmland
Like the incremental advance of years across their lives.
The Poor House outlived the town that built it.
And some of the gray-haired people outlived the Poor House;
Its site is now a high school for row house children
Whose grandparents live in retirement communities.
