It was when
I broke into
my father's
liquor cabinet
his celebratory
Chivas Regal
coursing through
my veins.
My tirade
on the manicured lawn
A hot Summer
Long Island evening
my neighbors
a transfixed audience
lining Revere Street
as I performed
screamed
my screed
against the suburbs
the conspiracy of broad lawns
and narrow minds
my invective breaking through
the drone of crickets
the deadening murmur
of TV sets
through open windows-
my madcap struggle
with the taciturn and very focused
police
on the lawn--
Hung over
and relishing
my performance
at dawn.
