To Accept This Appearance...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

It seems inevitable that when Poets allow themselves to be characterized by sameness, they invariably lose their purpose, and end up as mere caricatures of a past season. Aging, alcoholism, drugs, isolation, illness, injuries, heart conditions, whatever the reason may be; seeing ourselves through a lens of our own mortal frailties is never easy. In all walks, the strong will weaken, creativity will wane, people will stop caring, and the words (once so cherished) will eventually fail all of us. Honest soul-searching allows an individual an opportunity to ferret out those destructive things that have lain unnoticed in the heart and mind, those kinds of things that slowly isolate us from others, and eventually destroy us. Self-examination….

Poem Artwork
Had I the courage
equal these impulsive
desires of mine, to stay in
the fray, or to retire up along the
distant peaks, where casting all life’s
smaller stones upon the greater, may
well propel a once vibrant writer
to press past his limits…
.
Having known fear
in men’s hearts,
(hidden
in my
own as well)
and some of it
undiscovered, and henceforth
unknowable, how little sense it makes
that a man wear his life-narrative
as a cloak of insecurities…
.
This also I’ve known true
it’s not just cowardice I eschew,
or human pride that begs reproach,
it’s how the crowing poet recluse
becomes a servant of sameness
in a concerted effort
to flesh
out anxieties
and tears, and
unrequited fears,
(and all else unrealized) on
a digital dais for shallow praise….
.
Had eye the strength
equal these fair-minded
aspirations [of mine] each day
to accept this appearance with
no aimlessness or regret – I would
surely avow NEVER to flaunt the Words
now so sparse and gaunt. In an aging soil of
lessened brawn, so few remain to grow green on…

Rebuttal to Self: “Take all the words you never said, the ones you wish you’d had the courage to say and say them now.” Darkness is approaching, and freedom of expression will be greatly curtailed. Perhaps it’s time now to let go of who (or what) you used to be. Focus now on who you are, and what good you desire to accomplish with the precious little time you have left.

HUMAN FRAILITIES ARE ALL A PART OF US. THEY ARE GOOD FOR US. WE WILL MAKE MISTAKES AND WE WILL AT TIMES BECOME WITHDRAWN BECAUSE...THESE THINGS ARE THERE IN THE VALLEY'S WHICH GOD ALLOWS FOR A PURPOSE. WE GO THROUGH NOTHING ALONE GOD IS WITH US ALL THE TIME, RIGHT BY OUR SIDE. IF HE ACCEPTS AND LOVES US IN SPITE OF OUR SHORT COMINGS...THEN SURELY WE CAN EMBRACE ALL WE ARE AND ALL WE ARE NOT. THERE IS A HYMN THAT GOES LIKE THIS, '...I'M YOURS, LORD, EVERYTHING I AM, EVERYTHING I'M NOT...TRY ME NOW AND SEE, SEE IF I CAN BE COMPLETELY YOURS...' REMEMBER; Only when one can embrace their Insignificance before God...can one can truly embrace their Significance...to God.SO THEN, WE PRESS-ON DOING WHAT WE CAN DO, THROUGH THE POWER OF ALMIGHTY GOD, CONTENT...KNOWING THAT HE KNOWS WE ARE DOING THE VERY BEST CAN, IN JESUS NAME, AMEN. THANKS FOR SHARING, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I agree with your brave message dear Richard, say them now those words that are burning in your heart, forever they need to be engraved on the stone of honesty and courage, :)

Say the words, My Friend. May you find the courage to say them all before the need for them is gone. Profound and soul searching pen, Richard.

Great advice for aging authors. So many have done their greatest work when they were at death's door. There is no time when it is good to just write the same thing over and over. No one should ever wish they had written something after they no longer can.

A point of interest: I have been withdrawn from AD services because I couldn't renew my yearly fee, the end of an era after more than 20 years. I can no longer post, send messages, etc. Thank you for your advice and support over the years. Until my fortunes turn, as in the story of Joseph with lean and plentiful years, I bid you God-speed and farewell. John

I so profoundly deeply admire your realness Richard and confidence .I love the vision of a craftsman artist creating his gift without thought of what others feel. I do my best when I'm truly using those principles.
Peace to you and Michelle

Having the courage to write what we want to say is a writer's tool for success.

A poem written from the heart of a poet requires no praise or criticism. Depending upon who reads it and who can feel the raw emotion of the poet, the poem may become a hit or a miss.

A writer must believe in himself/herself that no matter what he/she writes it is the best work written. It needs no approval or validation from others.

Ageism is only a word. The poets only write what they feel, and it is okay to feel and write at the same time.
