Water Flows...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Image: Delany Creek in Tuolome Meadows. Yosemite National Park. Being the most expressive element in nature, water responds to her every mood, from passive tranquility to the most exaggerated fierceness. The creative mind can be likened to water as well. When it’s confused or churning, it’s difficult to see or imagine. But when it’s calm and at peace, everything becomes far more clear.

Poem Artwork
Water flows in brooks and rills
In rivers, becks, and streams,
In rushing creeks and rivulets
Water flows at will.
What once was there
Flows past me here
And then it’s moves away,
Away - then near - and then away,
The water knows no fear…
.
Water flows in deep ravines
O’er canyons cliffs and hills,
In gentle runnels flumes and gills,
Water flows at will.
Tho' dipping hands
Feel soft caress
One cannot be deceived,
It’s moody force and violent spew
Can rend the granite through…
.
Water flows in everything
As spiritual and real,
Like Adams Ale both will prevail
Water flows in you.
O’er waterfalls
We plunge at times
Pursuing what’s untrue ,
But staying wise and flexible,
Keeps falling from destroying you…
.
Water flows where ‘ere it may
Through basins lochs and crags,
In gorges deep and valleys vast
Water flows at will.
When torrents rage
And devastate
And rearrange the land,
The path of least resistance takes
The water where it can…
.
Water flows like time it seems
it never stops or schemes
where ere it goes, with ease it flows,
but never does it dream.
What once was there
flows past me here
and then it moves away
there – then here - and then away,
the waters always near
.

This piece of writing, Richard, has more imagery for me than if it were to be a fabulous oil painting. John highlights a concept in your poem that ‘wakes up the reader’ “Water flows in you.” A short sentence, a massive truth. The movement of word lines have me swaying in place, so that is a tremendous reader affect. {I’m listening to Brian Crain’s piano solo called ‘Rain - Dual Piano’ from his album Piano Opus}, how serendipitous. I think water is the most endangered species. But enough about me, . . . there are canyons of appreciation I have for this poem, the idea of water as expressive nature, that it brings emotions to us, arrival and departure, fear, peace. What is so powerful beyond these elements is your form, flowing in a ribbon of lines, nicely short lines that carry our eyes along the veins. Also your vocabulary: “In gentle runnels flumes and gills” and “Can rend the granite through”. The finale is a kind of haunting beauty — like the sound of a darma bell in the receding hearing of it. Enjoyable piece, Richard. ~~ djl

Water is life, water is strength, always at our side in one form or another, we seek it because it renews us each time. Beautifully written, you have a great talent. You surely left your watermark in this wonderful poem, dear poet !

Stunning wordsmithing as only a most accomplished poet can render it.
And filled with lots of new words, that I will need to assimilate.

I would like to hear this wonderful poem read by Annette Bening. She has a voice that could do your poem justice.

Such a fascinating rendition of water and all of its possibilities. I particularly enjoyed the notion that water or the river flows within us, a topic I have often considered and written about, for we flow as water through the waters of time. Nicely done.

Absolutely stunningly gorgeous and deeply inspirational place to get creative, quietly meditate and listen to the Father and Spirit, Richard. Long walks rejuvenate your soul and quiets you like nothing else and creates beautiful prayer time... As always your painted pallet description is soothing to the spirit.. Wonderful to see your works again.
Blessings, prayers and great health to you & Michelle~ D

Such a complete allegory of water's uses and influences of humankind and Mother Nature herself. Your layered impressions of water's personality of being here one moment, there the next, was arresting. Thanks for sharing.
