Dust Bowl of the 1930s

If we live long enough, we all dry up and blow away.
Global warming may speed the process.

Poem Artwork

Everything I hoped for,
is blowing in the wind.
What have I done to deserve this,
have I sinned?

A hot wind blows,
day and night.
No one knows,
just what our plight.

The grass grows brown,
and the trees grow weak,
do you not know,
of what I speak?

Mariah, Mariah,
why have you come?
You were so cold,
when I was young.

When we raced,
before the fall.
When we chased,
the mighty all.

Now your companionship,
it's too hot to touch.
I long for those days,
I long so much.

But everything is shriveling,
before my eyes.
We all have our springtime,
and everything dies.

So wind blow me up,
over the trees.
This frail skeleton,
flapping in the breeze.

For ashes to ashes,
and dust to dust.
My ashes to the wind,
I trust, I trust.

A nice, expressive perspective on "We all have our springtime, and everything dies".

Of dust we are made and to dust we return but the human spirit can still conquer through its lifespan the beauty of precious life anywhere.

ah, the inevitability of death and global climate change will no doubt make ashes of us all, no matter which way the wind blows ...

moving and well written ...

.....summer in the city, back of my neck feelin' hot and gritty. We get the dust bomb Santa Ana's here, usually in the fall. Plenty hot and dry. Pales however to the real deal as you have so eloquently described. Patrick

"Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky, all we are is dust in the wind" Such a beautiful pen Ron, filled with hope and truth.

So true! Our beautiful planet is heating up and things just aren't the same anymore. When I was a child I played outside all day, without sunscreen, and never had a sunburn. Nowadays, we don't dare go outside without sunscreen..or we certainly will burn. Enjoyed this poem Ron!

Ron, this reaches for a plateau of association and understanding that many three generations ago sought out of desperation -- you have captured the essence of Mariah and El Nino, human intervention and impact and the pain of tens of thousands who searched for answers during the dust bowl -- you have bridged the decades and tied today into that long ago era of human struggle and defeat -- a gripping evaluation penned with deafness and poetic nuances -- a keeper this one is Ron -- I bid you love and peace my dear friend -- Jon Michael

As sobering and haunting as the very wind you speak of, Ron. I live on coastal heathland which is sandy at the best of times but now... We've the first rain for months today which is a welcome relief as 200 firefighters have been battling an extensive blaze only five miles' down the road adjacent to Poole Harbour - probably started deliberately by mindless kids but a near catastrophe to local urban humans and killing untold rare reptiles and ground-nesting birds only found in this part of the country. Man and nature are becoming a very toxic mix.

Mariah, Mariah,
why have you come?
You were so cold,
when I was young.

... ah, then the grass WAS greener for certain sure. Love this work. And thank you for your recent visit to my own pages: much appreciated. Kate xx

A bad time that was, hopefully it will not come again...though with all the crazy weather we've been having, I wouldn't doubt it...e
