Sky Falling
I looked up at the sky,
saw that it was not falling.
Was blue with patches of white,
I could hear the birds calling.
Somewhere in the world,
death and destruction yawn.
Although I see it in the news,
life around me picks up at dawn.
People rush off to school or work,
birds and bees busily eating, mating.
Life is not harsh or deadly,
only people online are hating.
I can become addicted to vices like,
opioids, food, gambling, cults or sex.
But I am my own worst enemy,
if I blame others for my own hex.
If I get out in the morning and walk every day,
I will find my neighborhood friendly and nice.
As I wave at my neighbors or chat a while,
finding that they are full of advice.
Some of it good,
and some of it bad.
But I am my own person,
and don't like to be had.
The sky may be falling,
for some on this earth.
It does not matter,
your origin of birth.
If you are a good person,
you can escape it all.
By just enjoying what's around you,
rather than believing the fall.

Many thanks for your kind reviews othe Snow Mouse. I visited Uncle Joe's farm often when I was a child,and loved it there. I never did see any owls or rats. I saw mice , but rats were probably there too.

This was a psychological piece. I haven't done the study, but I believe that happy, outgoing people live much longer than those that are paranoid over what may happen. Sure, people are caught up in conflicts that we know about, namely Syria, Afghanistan, and now, Ukraine. But there are, I have read, 19 armed conflicts going on in this world today.
Yet the most devastating problem the world is facing right now is recovering from two and a half years of the devastation of COVID-19. The sky is falling is a metaphor for false impression that something traumatic is going to happen to us when statistically, it does not. I know that Britain entered the war when Hitler invaded Poland, so I understand the anxiety in UK over a madman with nuclear ability. But Moscow would be gone and all of the military bases in Russia if that ever happened. That aging technology would backfire like Putin's aging Army fighting a World War II campaign and losing to shotguns and hunting rifles, Molotov cocktails.
Worldwide media has made people with fear, fear more. I remember Winston Churchill's famous speech when Britain was threatened by invasion from Nazi Germany after easily overrunning France. A positive attitude does a lot for reaching the time when tranquility reigns again.
Hull should be proud for taking in orphan refugees. I recall a Hungarian girl joined our class when her family were refugees from the 1956 Hungarian revolution. She didn't stay, so maybe her family was able to return to Hungary. I hope that all of the Ukrainians will be able to return to their homes and rebuild the towns and villages that the Russians have destroyed.

Here in UK, we are not that far removed in distance from Ukraine, and it has been a
very scary time for us all…with mention of nuclear alerts being raised etc…
We received fifty orphans from Ukraine last night….and many private households
are volunteering to take Refugees…

Really?
Knowing the person you are, I’m sure you have perhaps a deeper meaning that is not obvious…
and which isn’t as simplistic and harsh as those words sound….

For my eyes this last part of your poem can turn your poem either white or black. Agreed one should not let encroaching evil to dissuade one from dancing with the beauty that remains within our world. This I believe is your meaning as I know you are a good person who doesn't ignore the ills of our world. But I can also see how one could interpret this last phrase as offering the previous verses the ability to ignore this evil in our world, as it is not within one's safe neighborhood or country. This does challenge one to be aware of the choices of neighbors around one.
