From an early age, we are fed a remarkable number of white lies in an effort to indoctrinate us and supposedly protect us from the truth. But generally at puberty or shortly after, young people began to question those lies and the generations often disagree strongly as a result.

Little White Lies

Those little white lies,

meant to disguise,

a truth that was,

too hurtful to bear.

To keep little ears,

safe from their fears,

as they grow up,

through the years.

Those little white lies,

grow into tight ties,

found in the mind of,

more than just a few.

It's okay to lie,

just to get by,

keeping the hurt,

of the truth at bay.

When those lies grow,

get bigger you know,

they become a part of,

life's grand game.

Where lying succeeds,

and everyone heeds,

the big lie as it emerges,

while everyone bleeds.

I have found a lot of use for those "little white lies" along the way in order to keep harm away from those I love. Of course, there are lies that are intended to mislead and to cause harm; I prefer to shun those. All the best, Ron.

Fleetwood Mac’s song ‘Little Lies’ comes to mind…
Sometimes even when we know the truth, we want
the ‘little lies’…to preserve a memory perhaps…
There is as Felix says, times when the stark ‘truth’ would
really hurt someone…and a ‘white lie’ is a preferable
and kinder option…
Truth however is often subjective anyway…
An interesting topic explored…

clever and in depth take, Ron. that is what you've been gifting everyone here, the honesty of your views. thank you. i always thought you should be paid for it, for your time, effort, and pro view. it amazes me how you do it, review poetry, articles, and stories here in the den. i've been to other platforms and people who do what you do play a major role in the platform acting as glue. so thank you for that, Ron, and much respect to you.

This is an interesting dilemma, isn't it? Everyone uses white lies once in a while without harm, but if the same lies continue for years, they can eventually cause chaos. An example is keeping information from a child that he or she is adopted, especially since DNA tests are so easy to take.

I am under the impression that people don't want to know the truth about themselves. Even in authorsden, I am not allowed to comment truthfully. When I do, I will never hear the end of it.

Therefore, sometimes, little white lies are welcome by people who can't handle the truths about themselves. It's not who the liar is, it is about who is receiving the lies.

Little white lies to children might well be the right thing as children need not be aware of the problematic problems of their parents.

Growing older little white lies might be seen as untruths that could be hurtful to children that are no longer too young to see the falseness.

As for me, I am a terrible leer as truthfully my face tells what might be true or false.

Men to women, or women to men? At times, in order to prevent a hurt feeling..? As a man that had spent sixty years as a husband to two different women, little white lies can be the best way to go.

There is a thin line between white lies and all out lying. Sometimes white lies are necessary whether everyone agrees with that or not. For example if someone has low self ego, depression etc. and ask you a question that you know will cause them even more harm...a white lie can be a blessing. Another situational example would be if you had several children and one asked if the other is your favorite...even if it may be the truth, the answer would still be a white lie. Your poem makes us consider just where the dividing line is. Well done my friend.

It's interesting how "those little white lies" do serve a useful purpose, are you rightly point out. However, the "big lie" (a bigger lie there never was) is now staring everyone in the face and is being capitalized upon everywhere, making the little white lie look innocent indeed. Will we ever now get beyond it.

A lyrical romp through the garden to weeds process of truth, white lies, and the big lie... most everyone has one or more in their mindful keepsakes of remembrances. But, as you point out, the "big lie" we all are reminded of every day from Washington is perhaps the self-absorbant delusion that will ultimately receive its due punishment.
