The Fix
Why do people think that taking,
something will make them better?
Is it just in our nature to overdo,
or didn't we get the letter?
Is it peer pressure to fit in,
or to take the offered dare?
Don't we innately know,
it will lead eventually, nowhere?
We talk of addiction as a disease.
Yet partake new highs with ease.
To cure all kinds of self-doubt,
eventually, just to turn us out.
While I ponder these questions out loud,
I will take my blue pill and be proud.
Drinking it down with my favorite crowd,
anything, to get my brain in a cloud.

My addictions are Hugs (mainly from my grand-kids) and reading YOUR poetry and other awesome poets on Authorsden (especially 'Steve Ralph') AND toasted cheese and Roma-tomato sandwiches which is usually my daily-lunch (YUM).Also I couldn't live without music,it is my drug of choice. When I was a phone volunteer for Lifeline years ago I had several Addicts call for help,it left me with a belief that those poor folk mostly took legal drugs (booze) or illegal drugs ( weed and others) because they desperately needed to escape their life as it was the nearest thing to being dead without being dead. Most hated themselves afterwards but kept doing it as their life was so painful in one way or more.Kindness and understanding toward their situation always helps and judging them harshly, which I NEVER would do,only will make things harder for them to cope. Advising medical help from Addiction specialists is best done with compassion.
