The younger we begin to think of where we are going, the better we will be able to fend off the vagaries of life.

A Man Struggling to Keep Above Water

On Thin Ice

Just when things are going smooth and nice,

suddenly, we find ourselves on thin ice.

The solid foundation we built under our feet,

starts cracking and falling apart in the heat.

When we are close to going under and cry out,

it's good to have a safety net without any doubt.

For the world goes round with ups and downs,

filled with happiness, laughter, sadness and frowns.

It is then when we know how to get off the ice.

With a foolproof safety net of our own device.

So that happiness and prosperity will follow our days,

driving out the misery of earlier, much riskier, ways.

Speak for yourself! I live by the seat of my ample pants...though I admit those aren't always the wisest choices to be made!

For sure, the concept of "thin ice" is an important one and most relatable. How many of us, all of us no doubt, have had the feeling of being on this ice at one time or another, even when, as you point out, we think we are on a solid foundation. Definitely food for thought.

Wow! That's a great poem, Ron. I can surely relate! One of my favorite sayings is, "Day by day, I stay in trouble!" I guess that, during all my years working for the Air Force, I was used to getting chewed out! So I assumed I was in trouble again when the boss wanted to see me! Of course, things were not always as bad as they seemed. Most of the time, there were misunderstandings, or no one was really to blame in an unfortunate accident. These feelings stayed with me when I worked as a college professor because when everything seemed to go just right, something always came to the surface that spoiled an almost perfect day. Murphy's Law is alive and well!

Yes, several of us on this site seem to be catching each other's vibes, as there is a bumper crop of paradoxical poems of pain to healing to contentment to happiness. Nowadays, one can not get too much of this kind of thinking and resolution.
