a poem that brought me to my senses as to what is deeply important
Crying, she runs bare-chested
Her sawdust-covered shirt in hand
“It’s itchy, grandma, it’s itchy!”
“Go in the barn and shake it off, hurry.”
“I can’t, it’s itchy”, she wails.
Impatience surfaces within me. How will I get it all done?
It’s getting dark and chores aren’t yet done.
And…she still wants to ride her pony.
Sitting in the barn aisle with tear stained cheeks
The last tiny bits of wood fall from from her boot
Dusk is turning to dark all too quickly
I yell for her to hurry
Her upturned eyes are pooled with tears
“I bet you want another little girl,
A girl who doesn’t get into the shavings.
A girl who doesn’t cry and cry.”
All my impatience and frustration melted away.
“No, Punkin’, I want a little girl who plays in the sawdust.
I want a little girl who sometimes says ‘no’
And has to sit in a corner
I want a little girl who
Cries and pouts and laughs and sings
And this little girl who rides like the wind
I want YOU, beautiful girl
