We Held the Future

I stared at her as she lay there so lovely,

And I wept for the hell she would have to go through,

Just to have a second chance at life.

And I wept because I had to leave her,

For soon I would be off to the airport and home,

To bind up the pieces of my life that unraveled in my absence.

And I held her close as she lay there,

In that hospital room on the sixth floor.

In our embrace I held my sister,

And our histories, our memories,

And all of the joy and all of the pain,

Of our existence on earth together.

And in that embrace, we held the future,

Looking ahead to the life, the inspiration, the joy,

The reasons for putting up with the constant indignities,

Which accompany this illness and long hospital stays.

Such a sad and moving write. It is so hard to leave those we love when they are suffering. A very good reminder to love them all the time.

Karen,

I loved this. So much in a few measures. Simply joyful - even in the reality, which it was discovered.

Deeply touching sentiment Karen. I remember several years ago when Michele and me had to endure the complete renal failure of one of our sons, (21 years old) and the long process of finding a new kidney. He is well now, thank God, but his life is forever changed.

Life is so bloody fragile, and in these kinds of circumstances we realize how very little we can really do. Loving and helping one another is always the better way.

Blessings to you ...
Richard

Karen...Your poem brings us into the very emotional ties of family and hardship, even still one can see the love for life between you both. A reminder to us all how precious life is and how love embraces those who find their memories within a time of hurting and pain.

You are a person who has strength far greater than imagination, I wish you and your sister all the best and a speedy recovery...

What a loving heart you have. You and your sister are so lucky to have each other--through sickness and through health. God bless you both and may health eventually be hers and happiness for each of you.
Your poem depicts the pain, and is well written.

You too have been included in them. I pray that God will give her strength to fight and win this battle she is in. God bless her and you. Love and prayers, Bonnie
