In the Lull of Life

I find it easy in the lull of life,

(Which happens all too seldom),

To write prose and verse which ring philosophical,

And which speak of beauty and wisdom with little strife.

I envy Thoreau’s time at Walden Pond’s edges of flowers,

Where he could write of man’s desperate plight,

Without having to spend those same angst filled hours,

For he had no worries of rent or food, or providing for others,

Surrounded there by beauty and nature.

But philosophy and wisdom are gained,

In the having of and rising above,

Some desperate and difficult times,

And in learning that even in those moments,

There can be found reprieve,

And that beauty and peace reside inside.

Wonderfully insightful. I love the introspection that emanates like a soft, warm light from this poem. Of course, I am a fan of Thoreau. Your last line concludes this piece beautifully.

Right on. The easy life never generated a good poet.

I like this Karen, It's those difficult times that remind us just how much we need and count on our Lord Jesus to guide us. May God bless you every day of your life.

splendid insight.
Making it through the challenges
at times can be the most rewarding
experience. And I just recently finished again
(two months ago)reading Walden,
(or Life in the Woods).

"It is no dream of mine
To ornament a line
I cannot come nearer to God and Heaven
Than I live to Walden even
I am its stony shore,
And the breeze that passes o'er;
In the hollow of my hand
Are its waters and its sand
And its deepest resort
Lies high in my thought"
Henry David Thoreau

Very well expressed Karen and it is often the serenity of the world around us that leads us to inspiration and prose.

Good work, Karen. Thoreau was insulated from real life, he only had nature to guide him on that pond. I haven't read much of the man, because fundamentally his insecurities at having to isolate himself seem somehow selfish to me. Not knocking selfishness, that is a good trait to have if not carried too far. I know for a fact that the great philosophers didn't all secret themselves in the wilderness, they faced life as life is supposed to be faced, head on. The last stanza tell it all, and you are correct in assuming that we can learn from wisdom gain, not watching the leaves turn brown, or the fish jump in the pond.

When I read Thoreau's Walden Pond many years ago, it became one of my favorite books. We all need time alone to retreat into ourselves occasionally; however, the last line in your poem says it all. We have to cultivate our lives--our thinking--with positive concepts that become stored inside us in the form of beauty and peace.

beauty and peace reside inside

I also believe that, but like old Thoreau, I would rather have beauty and peace both inside, and outside.
