Run Like a Girl

(Rachel and Zenyatta)

2009 in the year of thoroughbred racing,

Has been, indeed, ‘the year of the girls’,

Zenyatta, big and dark and self-assured,

And Rachel Alexandra, gangly like a colt.

Zenyatta, undefeated, in all of her fourteen starts,

Lets you know without a doubt,

That she has got it goin’ on,

She sashays, dancing to the starting gates,

Showing the fans that she’s there for the win.

And Rachel Alexandra surely mixed things up,

When back in May, the derby colt was foiled,

Along with the other hopefuls, she was all about her job,

As she ran on ahead of every one of those boys.

So tell me that I run like a girl,

For though it used to be said to elicit shame,

I now will hold my head up high,

For to run like a girl is to run faster,

And better than the boys!

Better to run like a girl than dance like a boy! :)) A clean sweep in the sweepstakes with a great show of sashaying filly-power - I love it! Great poem, Karen: full of grace, dignity and a goodly show of deserving pride. May the daughters run likewise. xx

Horses are such splendid-looking creatures. I can understand your admiration for them, Karen. They seem so gentle and yet have power and grace.
