New Years ’02

The time has come once again
To sit in judgement of our sins

Our fortunes bound one to another
Our fate lies in the hands of others

For powerless are we who toil
Forced to live in great turmoil

We ask ourselves ‘Why must this be!
Are not all others just like me?’

Strip away the pomp, the pretense
Why yes they are! It just makes sense

To see the world with open eyes
A humble heart can tell no lies

For what one truth would our heart reveal?
And what wounds could that one truth heal?

For all our problems have but one root
A primary evil from which all others shoot

Would that we could change but one thing
Unto this world peace and happiness bring

What single link could cause such woe?
That the world would flourish were it to go
To own or use
We need to muse

For it is one road that will set us free
While the other leads to slavery

This backbone of the capitalist state
Robs our freedom and seals our fate

‘Let but a few prosper’ the wealthy say
A luxurious life for which the poor must pay

The time has come when we must ask ourself
Why we tolerate a few to own all the wealth

A better place this world would be
If the emphasis shifted from ‘I’ to ‘We’

For soon the world will split in two
Those who suffer and those who rule

It is our children that we will doom
To a lives of toil, suffering and gloom

In our hands lies their fate
We must act, not hesitate

For the capitalist dream has left us behind
To this fact we must not be blind

A resolve made by you and me
Will deliver our children from slavery

The system that rewards the selfish few
Will enslave and pauperize all of you

Our future lies in the world of ‘We’
In the world of ‘I’ lies poverty

Consider this thought with your humble heart
For it is with you that it all must start

No violence is not the way!
Nor is it needed to save the day

To make the corrupt system go bust
We must forsake ‘in God we trust’

For money makes the world go round
And forms the chains with which we’re bound

For now bide your time and steel your heart
I’ll let you know when it’s time to start

For this is but the first of three
As we must proceed carefully!

With firm resolve, our duty clear
Together we’ll make a better New Year!

I enjoyed the entire poem, particularly in light of conversations elsewhere along the same theme, but one phrase just reached out and grabbed me: "A better place this world would be
If the emphasis shifted from ?I? to ?We?"

Very beautiful quote - I think you should put that on your bio as your favorite quote *winks*
