As I step into each new year
Knowing a bit more, seeing a bit more
The questions become more
Even as I know more answers
The years seem like they are closing in
As if time has started moving faster
Like a locomotive picking up speed
Carrying me ever faster into that dark night
Where all the questions end
The place I find silence, forever
That day I used to never fear
Chases me in my dreams
Assuring me it is certain
In the daily paper obits I find I am scared of what I will not know
So much of what I sought to understand
That I will not comprehend so many truths
My soul has ached to know fully
Not learning how to live haunts me
As I stand in the shadows of the certainty of death
an overwhelming sense of angst of death permeates this poem ... yes, we are all born to die and as we get older become more concerned with its inevitable outcome but then again perhaps life is a preparation for death in which we continue to live ...
Striking poem. You so clearly state that which haunts me too. Your description of time as a locomotive picking up speed is right on the mark. When I was younger, it seemed one year was an eternity and now I feel like I'm on a fast slide towards the end. You described a sense of panic in this.
