This is a poem about an earlier time in my life when I turned to alcohol to help me. That's a misnomer because the alcohol certainly didn't help, dah...

Another Beer?

I need another beer
That last one didn’t make things clear
Because I need clear vision if I’m to steer
My life’s plan through the fear

Good intentions lost in the thirst for a drink
Not wanting to realize I’m on the brink
To my own destruction this could be a link
And this is why I hide my dread in another drink

My crutch wasn’t working well tonight
It left me shallow, hollow and uptight
Maybe one more will make things all right
And the hole in my soul won’t hurt tonight

Liz, emotions express in your verses,
many a person has used the crutch of alcohol to heal a wound or whatever, it doesn't work to self medicate like that as it is only temporary fix, and can be fun too, which is also temporary...
sighhhhh.....

Spot on !!! Been and blame-near drowned. 99-bottles-of-beer-on-the-wall-99-bottles-of-beer. If more had stayed on the wall, maybe there wouldn't be so much lost time to make up for (as IF). Oh,well.
Have to Get Through the Night somehow. Before alcohol came close to ruining me, it got me through a l o t. So I give it credit. Great lover before it turned on me!!

'Far as the poem goes, couldn'a been very far in yer cups. Don' ramble, don' zig, don' zag. Tells it like 'tis with a flair not to be found in a can or a bottle! May not be autobiographical, in which case brava for personalizing the issue to make people stop and think. Maybe put the brew back in the fridge unopened and go write a poem half as good as Liz Price's! (((((Love you!)))))

You are right the booze seldom helped anyone through a problem but I have imbided myself the odd time and it has if nothing else gave me an excuse to get out go to a bar and actually meet and talk to people so who knows...pros and cons to everything. Good deep and honest write Elizabeth.

Dearest Elizabeth,
Thank you for speaking so openly and honestly about what is arguably the worst drug of all...... total relationship wrecker due to its one-sided and irrational views. The 'other' doesn't exist..
I've been on the receiving end, and it's a lonely place to be.
But I understand 'crutches' and am certainly not judging.. I thank you for penning this from your honest heart..
Love and admiration, Suzie :-D

Done that and been there. I think a good rule of thumb is if you need it, you probably shouldn't have it...however not everyone has this affliction.
