Antecedent Chemistry

Have you ever thought about the chain of events that has happened to bring us to life? Think of the things that could have happened, any one of which would have terminated the germ line of which we are part, and therefore have nullified our existence. This poem looks at particular aspects of the possibilities through an ode to our forebears’ passion.

We wonder that we live and draw breath,
Given our ancestors often faced death
Before finding a suitor with which to be,
And grow more branches on our family tree.

We think of our present, an individual thing,
But us to the world, family history did bring,
And that, dear friend, is quite simply, chance
From hormone’s whim, and the mating dance.

But if a precursor’s eye hadn’t its gleam,
Or another lost through damp of a dream,
Or a single progenitor just not in the mood,
Our germ line severed — Oh my, how rude!
Our place’d be held by a different soul,
And we’d be in life’s fabric an invisible hole.

S
o whatever the circumstance or social event,
We’re glad that together our ancestors went,
Across the generations of joy and pain
Made possible our node on life’s linked chain.

Backtrack your genealogy however far,
For ancestral coupling thank your lucky star
That your germ alone each time did survive,
For that’s the reason you’re now alive!

Jeez, Leland, if I could only wrap myself around a fraction of your optimism, I think I would know the divine plan... It, within your and others parameters, is on the tip of my mind. Ha! Now, isn't that an Ego, or what?

I am because I was a lucky germ. I am because I am. Riverworld, Earth, Pern, Asimov, Sagan, Gor, The Ship That Sang, Middle Earth, Mowat, Tarzan, Norton, King, Earth, Dune, and back to me. And, you.

:) Ha! Love this, Leland, so upbeat, and qualifying...

Yes, given life's whim, it's amazing that any of us have come down thousands of generations.

Ever notice how the stupid and rash have many children. It is also amazing that intelligence has survived, as well.

My ancestor is a Pharaonic ape...LOL who is yours? an Extenialist?
"intersting Leland", you are despite your 'unappetizing' extentialism.
I have seen a row of 11 skeletons at the Museum in Colombo, from the ape to the Homo Sapien.. I was awed. But heavens, I still looked gravely different from the Homo Sapien version - which means sometime down the road, me and you will be considered better-looking monkies, eh?

Indeed, I thank my lucky star every single day, Leland... and all the Celt mothers and Iberian fathers who ancestrally coupled and produced the chain... ending in this "mutt" of a happy link! One more great write to add to my library.

"Antecedent Chemistry" - What else can one add to formulate a solution for this formula? No use! It compensates from the inside out through its own psychobiology.

This composition is delivering an actual message... "Antecedent Chemistry" is teaching and warning.

Poetry is Richer today... "Antecedent Chemistry" is a treasure of our twenty-first century Poetry.

I Salute the Author of "Antecedent Chemistry".
