John Martin is right and Mark doesn't seem to have a clue. We no longer work dawn to dusk and have too much time for leisure (especially the unemployed). The Romans used the circus to keep the rabble from rising up. The more violent, the better. We have this myth about the wild West and the “equalizer”, the handgun.

The British don't have that heritage and they don't have guns in the hands of the population like we do. Few people die of violence in the United Kingdom. The NRA is right, guns don't kill people, people do. But, with so many guns available to so many people (even children in homes) accidents and intentional acts of violence will occur, whether they are imitations of fictional violent entertainment or self-righteous, self protective, self-defense.

Tom is right. Guns kill people––many many people. And what's to gain when a gun kills? Freedom? Superiority? Stupidity? There's usually a lot of outcry and mourning as well as the response for some kind of overkill as revenge––except in families where kids accidentally kill kids. I think it's time we need to think about guns and what they are really for. We don't hunt and gather anymore.

A former hunter who ate everything he shot. Are you prepared to eat the intruder you shoot? Should the leaders of our country who go to war eat every person they kill? It's good protein, why should it go to waste?

It's not the weapons, Tom...it's us. In Rome they called it The Games. Here we call it TV or The Media. We don't have to go to the Arena to watch the slaughter, we can sit at home and press buttons to bring it into our own living rooms. Some people support the right to bear arms...I support the right to ARM BEARS....Seriously, I can understand rifles and shotguns for hunting, skeet and target shooting, and good quality handguns for personal protection, varmints and plinking. I CANNOT understand why any reasonably sane pertson would want military-style automatic firearms with big clips other than to be able to brag that their pecker is bigger than someone's who doesn't have one.

Tom, I'm not sure that I know what you're talking about here. If it's for complete gun control then, of course, you know that I'm against that because I absolutely know that taking the guns from people like me will, in no way, stop those bent on hurting and killing people. What has 9/11 got to do with gun control? Am I stupid or am I just not seeing what you're getting at here?
Yes, I do enjoy shooting at a stationary target. I found that I do have somewhat of an eye problem and feel a sense of accomplishment hearing the "ping" of my bullet hitting a target at fifty or a hundred yards. Is this, in your opinion, a bad thing?
