Leland’s Challenge Composite

The responses to Leland’s Challenge were excellent and thanks to all who participated in writing and reading. In writing my own single-sentence speller, I learned some nuances of word usage. Perhaps those who responded were able to come away with something positive from their own experience with their totally voluntary effort. I indicated in several places that I would post a composite of all entries, which I do with this post. In the interest of compactness, I removed artwork from the entries. I corrected a couple of obviously misspelled words and have numbered each entry. I removed extra space lines and comments not directly pertaining to the write and apologize if I inadvertently changed formatting of your poem. For anyone interested, this composite can provide a reference for troublesome word usage.
Personal Note: My future challenges I make to myself only, as was my practice before this fun exercise.

Capital Gain (Leland's Challenge)

08. by Catherine Napaluch

Saturday, August 09, 2003

as/since, your/you're, bare/bear, than/then,

since/sense/cents, chose/choose, to/too/two, buy/by, on/own, sale/sell, capital/capital, in/end

Capital Gain

As your bare wallet was more than doubled ever since payday; you chose as common sense to buy when on sale, then to sell what you buy to make capital gain rather than having to bear without the bare necessities or choose to get by with only two cents to your own name because, by golly, then you're being much too frivolous with your finances and your capital concern is to avoid that in the end.

Interrogation (Leland's Challenge)

07. by Jerry Bolton

Saturday, August 09, 2003

Interrogation

Why do you choose to not tell us where you were at the time?

Since that night you chose to commit the dastardly crime

I done told ya, I know better than

To fib to youse guys, no I don't know what happened back then

I don't think so because you're too crafty you think

But I know you went to that bar to meet your shrink

Naw, I just walked in to buy a cocktail, I saw her

And sat down by her for awhile, then I said bye

As you're going to be difficult, I got to warn you

I'm going to let my partner question you as I say adieu

Oh, no please don't do that I can't bear it

The man's a bare-knuckle champion boxer I know I'll get hit

Well, I'm not one to stand on principle because of that

I went to school with him and he cold-cocked the principal with a bat

Oh I heard that too, okay, I'll tell you where I was

If you'll stay here like we were and don't bring in that other fuzz

But if you don't clear out your conscience I'll go and get him

He'll keep you conscious and you're chances of survival are slim

The room got very quiet as the man pondered this

He had to confess but it wasn't quite as bad as the other man's fists.

The Rescue - Leland's Challenge

06. by Jacqueline Brooks

Friday, August 08, 2003

He found the daughter of the Principal hiding in the dorter of the fort,
he had to rescue her on
principle if he wished
to
court her but he must make
sure they did not get
caught, they were quite quiet but soldiers appeared and he fought them off as they made
their way out into the
desert,
he knew he could not
desert her
now; they could
see the sea so they made a dash for a boat, the wind was too strong to wind the sail and
there was a row among their oarsmen on how to row. He had a wound
so she
wound a strip of her
red petticoat around it
as he
read a sonnet to her, then
he felt there was no
time like the present to present her with a present of a sweet posie of thyme,
the
whole root of this story is the route that they took to get her
out of this
hole.

Once Upon a Time (Answer to Lelands Challenge)

05. by Gaye Dale

Friday, August 08, 2003

Once upon a time…

 There was a brave KNIGHT

Who in the darkness of NIGHT

Rode into COURT

With the villainess he CAUGHT

For he SOUGHT to PROFIT

Because this SORT of PROPHET

A three legged WITCH

Was the one WHICH

He could tell was COUNTERFEIT

Because he could COUNT HER FEET

She denied much of their LORE

Which was against religious LAW

So into the FORT at the end of the ROAD

After he FOUGHT and hard he RODE

He BROUGHT the Outlaw from the WOOD

And BOUGHT with him the ring he WOULD

PRESENT then to the prettiest MAID

A wedding PRESENT it was MADE

The people gave a mighty CHEER

The King saluted from his CHAIR

Leaving they went on THEIR WAY

He carried her THERE for she didn’t WEIGH

Nearly as much as the HORSE

And he told her so, til he was HOARSE!…. (a wise man!)

By The Fountain(Leland's Challenge)

04. by Eileen T. Waldron
Friday, August 08, 2003

The other day I passed by the  fountain
where I used to meet with you in the past.
The last time we were there with our
friends their attitude upset you, I know
they're too critical, but I have an idea.
Remember we were picking the roses that
grew there, you said a rose loses its beauty
as the petals die, it's sad to watch them become
loose and fall one after another. I think we're
fortunate to have a place where we can go and
recall what we all thought were wonderful times.
They are still our friends and we should get
together for old times sake, and new beginnings.
Like the roses we too are getting older.Maybe your
charming words would affect their thinking, and
have a good effect on our relationship, if we invite
them to a reunion in the park by the old fountain.

Buy My Books, Will You?……(A Leland Waldrip’s Challenge)

03 by May Lu a.k.a. Sandie Angel
Friday, August 08, 2003

So,
Am I
Supposed to
Understand your
Bare conscience
which
Was perceived to be more than
Just nonsense rather than
What you chose as
Principle to
Buy
?
Or
Was I
Supposed
To heighten your
Conscious
self since I can’t
Bear it that you’re now buying for
The birds rather than to buy
Wildly
my books that
Your principal
Had said
So
?
Ha,
Was I
Supposed
To remind you
Of any consequence
That comes your way that
You’re entirely responsible to bear
All your pains since you
Chose to buy those
Bird seeds that
The birds
Eat
?
Well,
Okay then! Good-bye love!
It was nice knowing you!

Thought (Prose) for Leland's Challenge

02 by Nicole (Nikki) L. Davis Vergara
Friday, August 08, 2003

The midnight HOUR of dreaming approaches
a time when all THAT WAS minutely CONSCIOUS develops deeper in OUR CONSCIENCE
THEN unfolds it's glories with a not so QUIET magnificence
yet often we take not the time TO HEAR what heart, mind and soul via thoughts and dreams does BARE QUITE openly for us
lost in the primordial essence of grizzly BEAR grunting and growling
the HERE and now more important
not realizing perhaps we WERE always so despondent with these thoughts and dreams we CHOSE to remember
I TOO have such moments I shall admit
still I know we are the PRINCIPAL managers of each PRINCIPLE thought and dream
MINE are for ME to CHOOSE what to do with
AS YOU must CHOOSE YOURS which seem the most important and what to do with them

01. Leland Waldrip

As your bare conscience

has been more than troubled since Sunday,

you chose as a principle not to buy,

but if ever again your conscious inclination

to buy wildly becomes more than you can bear,

then by Heavens,

you’re being too frivolous with your principal,

so you can just bear the pain

and choose to wave “bye” to your money.
