Surplus Billions

“A billion here, a billion there – pretty soon you’re into some serious money.” – Former Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen’s statement on Government spending of tax dollars. He could have said a similar thing about human population growth.

People Who Need People (in these quantities) were/are ignorant or inconsiderate of the consequences for their progeny!

Population:

Three million years before big trouble,

Total one billion by 1804,

Hundred twenty years, population to double,

Total two billion by 1927,

Added a billion in thirty three years scant,

Total three billion by 1950,

Fifty years, double, conservationists rant,

Total six billion by 1999,

Project another billion in thirteen years,

Total seven billion by 2012,

Projected doubling of six billion. Tears,

Total twelve billion by 2050 ?

Does an unrelenting pattern here assemble?

The future stares at us and wildly we tremble:

Recycled drinking water, rationed petrol,

High rises to the skies, small boxes for all,

Planes circling beehive, taking hours to land,

Clogged highways and beltways in still-stand,

That’s only pedestrians, no gas for cars,

Only view is up, and smog dims the stars.

Queues everywhere, nothing without a wait,

No one served without a number to hate,

People lost in seas crowded with people,

No sea life to make even a ripple,

Large mammals extinct, with remnant held in zoo,

A few in parks slated for high rises too.

People who wanted hordes of little ones,

Filled their happy lives with daughters and sons,

We love them all, each and every child,

But our family decisions were recklessly wild,

Urged so by ignorant church, foolish state,

We all had a hand in sealing our fate.

Now that our gross error we’ve painfully weighed,

Without doubt, family planning could’ve paid.

Screwed ourselves out of home on earth in lieu

Of limiting offspring to child or two.

Now, children’s fate will make us all sick!

Unless this tide turns mighty damn quick,

And we slide downward on fertility scale,

Our world society is programmed to fail!

Oh, to ignore the urgently desperate need

Of pessimistic ranting over human seed,

Would be bliss I know deep in my heart,

But someone must shout for a jumpstart—

Put humans on notice of a different time,

That we’re poisoning our ecological clime.

It's imperative to change, be efficacious,

Cease treating earth as infinitely spacious.

This is a scary thing to think about. It makes me think about how people will probably start killing each other off at a more rapid rate. It seems like the more crowded together people get, the more violent they are. My daughter and son-in-law, at least for now, have made the choice to not have children. It's just a scary thing to bring children into the world these days, and it's not just the problem with overpopulation--it's a whole host of things. Excellent thought-provoking write.

No room for our big bears Leland. Some of them are already showing up in populated areas. I was watching tv when they had to shoot one out of a tree the other day. Hey maybe this space thing will take off and we will soon populate the stars with our destructive selves. Interesting well expressed piece of work. Right next to my companies main office they have this big farm. On it are several big bison and several little baby ones. I always love just watching them. Then my mind thinks about a buffalo burger. My friend called them beefalos. G

Why does thinking of this always causes a huge lump to form in my throat?... No... Earth is not infinitely spacious, as so to harbour mankind's infinite greed and nonchalance... infinitely. Wonderful, deeply touching write, my admired friend.

It's not the poem . It's the message. Like Paul Erhlich, I'm dismayed that so many don't get it. Live their narrow little lives and send their children to hell (on Earth).

Advancements in medicine are also making strides in lengthening our lifetime. Babies are not only made by nature these days; even those once barren can 'have' children. Those pregnant unwillingly can abort. When mankind plays with nature, they seldom consider the long-term results. We are are worse enemy.
Thought-provoking and well thought out write.

Have to agree with you in part Leland! No one to blame but the people themselves who refuse to place any restrictions on their actions. This can't be regulated by government, it must come from the people themselves being responsible for what they do!

Earth-centric Humanity at the Crossroads by Martin Treon

For the reasons I describe in this book, the world-wide suffering, death and extinction of humanity is very likely to occur, unless nonviolent and democratically determined radical and revolutionary personal and societal actions and changes are taken
