Possessed

Wellness is a precious commodity. I hope all are avoiding the flu, as this is a particularly nasty variety this year.

Possessed

It sneaked into place with quiet moves,

And set up shop in folds and grooves,

Then went about bodily control seizing.

The first I knew was fits of sneezing.

From there it brought sniffling and wheezing,

Heated my brow, although I was freezing,

Sapped my strength, left muscles limp,

Weak, hollow shell, shivering wimp.

Mother of coughs supplanted fever, chills gone,

Gut wrenching tear of muscle from rib bone,

Involuntary spasmodic contractions insane,

A trembling fetal ball paralyzed with pain.

Demon repeatedly ripped, extracted cries

‘Til my fingers found and gouged his eyes,

Uninvited rampage halted, biting ceased,

Found wondrous relief, new life leased.

Under control, though he squirm and seeth,

I could co-exist with carnivorous teeth,

Held the writhing devil for hours so pinned,

‘Til my abdomen began to heal and mend.

So if you find yourself on the receiving end

Of a demon whom your abs would rend,

Find his vulnerability, press steady and tight,

And think dispossession with all your might.

Bless you, dear friend, infinitely! Even of this nasty little but powerful demon that causes enormous devastation, you create a most amazing poem... Here are my heartfelt wishes that the beastly thing will be completely exorcized soon, and that your health will be fully restored. You are one precious being, Leland.

Gosh Leland -- I just got over that disgusting flu and more power to you if you can keep your head so straight as to write about it. All I could do was curse! Great write, and you're right: it's got to be fought with all you've got.

Uh oh...I hate getting sick. I have been avoiding thinking about it, your poem reminded me why. January is trade show season for me. I talk to thousands of people a day. I rarely make it through without a cold. I just hope that a cold is the worst I get.

I'm sorry you've had the flu. It seems to be bad this year. We've been instructed at my new place of employment to wipe down our phones, all doorhandles, computer keyboards etc with disinfectant, as well as to wash our hands frequently. Get well and Happy Holidays to you.

Yep, I know that "fetal ball" position. Doesn't really help, but contortions sometimes work. Give pain to another part of your body and try to forget the real pain. Sort of like sticking pins in?

Thanks, LeLand
