The nature of the lakes

These lakes hold gifts and treasures

shining fish of rose gold and silver

all bespangled and glittering emerald shiners.

The freshwaterseas slide toward the Atlantic

and flow forever in seadreams.

Eagles and swift peregrines ride their airstreams--

their shadows slide on beaches of quartz sand and

beaches where agates tumble and slide.

The Niagara escarpment rises above

glittering embayments while

burbot and whitefish dart in depths among

bones of sailors who went down with their ships.

Moody and fickle

they chuckle and lap

turn sullen and black they take back

and give and then take back.

Take back.

I never could spell the indian word for Lake Superior, but when I was in my pre-teens, and before the dark years were forced on me, I lived in Calumet, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula. I remember walking about a ½ mile to the Lake's edge, and watched the boys chase frogs, and catch fish, sitting on the rocks, with their toes in the water. I remember watching the freighters as they passed by, coming from Superior mills. Those days are all I have of REAL fun and freedom to be me. Then I was clamped in irons and thrown without mercy, into state institutions because my mother and the powers that be, wouldn't allow this girl to be me. I agree with Ed and Taylor, wonderul imagery of nature at its most beautiful moments. Thnx for sharing Barb. May the Lord Jesus bless you and yours, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, stubborn to a fault, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your litle terrified den sister, Barbie
