True Friendships Never Fade
My dear sweet friend from youth,
Who would have believed it could be
That fifty-six long years later
We would be back in touch, you and me?
When I look back on those days
Of friendship and of our youth
Life was so much more simple then
Filled with morals, values, and truth.
Living in a small community as we did
We were blessed with knowing everyone in town,
It was easy to develop close friendships
When we all got together to run around.
Now, so many years later,
Its hard to remember the things we did back then,
But I remember feelings of love and affection
And the joy of knowing you as a friend.
Mostly I remember all the laughter and fun
Of sharing good times together.
I remember you laughed a lot back then,
Our lives weren’t familiar with stormy weather.
I guess we both laughed a lot back then
Nothing bothered us way down deep
It was all fun and giggling and happiness
And gathering up memories we could keep.
I remember our dear, sweet, young Mary
With blonde hair and a small and slender frame
A young girl full of life and tender challenges
Still young enough to make life a game.
Perhaps we don’t laugh as much now,
After the years have passed on by,
Perhaps we’ve suffered too many losses and pain
That make our smiles turn to sighs.
Despite it all, God has been good to us,
And given us love to guide our way.
We’ve received his wonderful bounty
Each time we sought him out to pray.
My dear sweet long-time friend
Renewing our friendship is a gift we both give
A remembrance of joy and feelings of youth
I’ll cherish with pride and love—as long as I live.
