I wrote this on the anniversary of 9-11 in 2003. I thought it would be appropriate for Verteran's day as well. I appreciate and honor all of our soldiers and their sacrifice for us all.
Free?
Sitting in class...deep in the coal mines... changing diapers...answering telephones... we were all scurrying to and froe... Chatter, quarrels, conversations, presentations, crying, and laughter...filled the air far and near. Just another typical day in America... as we had come to know. In an instant...all did change... chaos, panic, screams, helplessness... darkness and fear. On 9-11 my world as others did shatter... as the glass fell from each tower... who would have thought... on our great land... the land of the red, the white, and the blue? Behind fallen rubble American's would have to cower, while overhead enenmy planes flew! The nightmare quickly becoming a reality... the air filled with clouds of smoke... dust, flames, and debris... What was going on? This wasn't supposed to happen in America? We are...or were... thanks to our soldiers we're still the land of the Free!
I would like to give thanks to all of our soldiers, those whom served in each war as well as today. I pay a special tribute and prayer to the families of those who were left due to an ultimate sacrifice, and those who have loved ones fighting for our country and my family today. God Bless America, our Soldiers, and their families.

Amen Joyce! I remember screaming at the top of my lungs when the first plane hit. I immediately knew what was happening. Thanks to the sacrifice of our men and women in our military and the support of their families, we stand strong again and hopefully will be more vigilant in the future. Let us never forget!

I'll never forget that day. I was having an afternoon nap (time difference of 6 hrs) when my wife woke me up to come and see what's on TV. I was shocked. To see alive such a drama is terrible. Great poem. Victor

Powerful then and so powerful today Joyce thank you for sharing this tribute of heart. A blessing to read for me..
Just reading it, gave me shudders all over again...You've captured it very well..and embodied the sentiments of most people..even those from around the world...who stood and stared, and sobbed.
I join you in your beautiful prayer, too. Thank you.

Dear Joyce,
I was living in South Africa during 9-11 but was shocked and horrified along with the rest of the world. It seemed impossible and I remember the days following, watching the news on television with mute horror and wondering if friends living in NY were safe.
A perfect tribute. After all, this is why they serve.
Thanks for sharing.

First of may I just say. "BASTARDS" re 911 terrorists, needed that.
Well done, great tribute, all of us here lost someone in the world wars..
Chilling stuf, especially as 9/ll marked the conception of the new wold war: global terrorism, so really this poem's theme should appeal to international readers, not purely to a parochial USA audience.
A beautiful tribute Joyce to all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in whatever line of fire. Very poignant and superbly penned. Love your good friend, Panda :)
