Just a quick write about a simple childhood memory that I suddenly remembered after hearing the song "Satin Sheets" What a tear jerker, but I enjoyed the warm and fond memory of time with my mother...

Satin Sheets

I was but a child…
but the memory still lingers…
almost as a dream,
a dream of days gone by.

I heard a song softly playing,
the volume turned down low…
behind a closed door.

A depressing message it did bestow.

Quietly I opened the door,
to find my mom lying across the bed…

Tears stained her cheeks.
Mommy, are you okay?
A look of shock…but nothing did she say.

Again, I asked what’s wrong…
I’m afraid…I begged!

She didn’t say a word,
but gave me warm hug instead.

That song continued to play,
while I lay there with my mom.
Not a word did we say…
somehow I just understood.

While we lay there in our own silence,
those lyrics rolled over and over,
as the needle touched the old forty-five record,
time and time again…while Jeanne Pruett sang,
about those satin sheets to lie on…and satin pillows to cry on.

Nothing saddens a child more than to see their parent cry, for whatever the reason. Funny how a smell, a song or a sound can stir all those childhood memories. This was beautiful.

Joyce so sweet of you to share such an intimate and emotional moment with us all her...yes I always remembered that song too...it was touching. I guess it could and can conjure up tears especially of a broken heart.

Lots of love and enlightenments to you,

Joyce, you've brought memories of long ago alive and with images & knowledge that even though you were young...you knew deep inside there was a sadness inside your beloved Mother. Your love shown to her that day, I'm sure she will never forget! The song, Satin Sheets, has touched many people's lives & caused their hurts to open to a wound. Thanks for sharing such a nice poem.

I love the bittersweet quality of this memory, Joyce, and the way you present it here in this lovely poem. I remember that song and how sad it was to me the first time I heard it as a child. I'm glad you were there with your mother -to be there and understand. Well done!

I feel like that rippled vinyl with the needle playing across its grooves, Joyce... Killing me softly with your song here, strumming my life with your fingers... as another wonderful songster would say! I heard Mothers sang a good song... LOL Bless you for this, very powerful and vivid. K xx

A lovely poem which to me signifies the reality of growing up. I got the impression (I might be wrong!) that the child who caught her mother crying was upset to realise her mother wasn't an invincible strong woman, but had emotions too. Joyce's poetry could be regarded as sentimental, but I think her work is beautifully old fashioned when life seemed more innocent and less jaded than it is now.

Joyce, I love that song, "Satin Sheets" by Jeanne Pruett. I remember hearing it on the radio, and I saw her singing it at the Grand Ole Opry. I will never forget it. Wonderful experience; and what wonderful memories you bring up in this poem. I can see why your mamma cried; that song touched people in a way that today's country never can. How I miss the old songs..*sighhh*

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :( >tears! <

Now I'll always wonder why the song made her cry! Nicely written, Joyce. I recall that song, too, and probably shed a tear or two myself back when I used to listen to it. I really enjoy your poems and your writing style.
