Broken Keys...

It's funny how one word can trigger a memory...creating a spark, and an entire poem evolve before our eyes! I hadn't thought about this part of my life in many, many years...

Broken Keys...

A word was spoken to me this morning
triggering a childhood memory…
a memory that was buried deep within the past
and inside my soul.
A writer I always desired to be,
making up stories and poetry
from the tender age of three!

A craving from the inside to use words
words that expressed how I felt…
as I aged, the words continued to grow
and from my pen they did flow…
sometimes gentle…sometimes strong!
Exposing my heart but only for me…
not yet ready for others,
for myself…the words did still belong!

As a young girl…I desired a typewriter more than anything
but a gift so extravagant was only a dream…

This gift I was given…only given in vain
a used portable to bang out the words
to make up for his absence in my life
not to help me reveal my heart and soul.
My father’s machine…it wasn’t of any help,
for my words or my spirit…
not any at all!

You see the keys…they often stuck
the ribbon was always a mess…
Others before me had used this hateful machine!

I wondered if they felt this stressed?
Soon it was boxed up and forgotten…
Thirty years later, it remains stored in my basement…
covered with dust, memories, and broken keys!
However…this did not break my spirit…
and it did not stop my dream!

You see, I continued to pour my heart onto countless pages
with my pen and my heart
until a desktop computer I could obtain.
Where I finally sat for hours…
There I poured out my heart, myself, and, my soul…
Today I am reminded with laptop in hand…
my mother’s words of wisdom…
never give up your dream,
no matter how impossible that it might seem!

I remember those old typewwriters with sticking keys. My grandparents had one and I still have a letter I wrote on that old Smith Corona to my partnts which my mother has kept for all these years. Your poem sparked a memory for me too. I think your poem teaches an important lesson in life. Never give up, even in the face of difficulty, on your calling. I'm glad you never did! Perseverance and struggle will make us stronger and wiser if we are willing to keep trying. Thanks for the memories. Well done Joyce!

SO RIGHT!!! I can see the little Smith-Corona electric that I used to write my first novel [a hideously long tome that will never see light of day, but which broke the "will I ever be a real writer"
barricade} and the cheap, yellow, newsprint-weight paper that for years I couldn't write without. . .and that is just one of many
memories that keep me plugging away. This is GREAT, Joyce!

I dreamed and I dreamed...and as I grew older, they changed. . . and then they changed again. I don't give up on them, I just haven't been able to obtain them, while they still exist! LOL!
You are so write. . .so right! I'm so glad you never gave in to your stuck keys and messy ribbons!
Mama's always right, egh?

Your mother was definitely right. And I still have my first typewriter, too. I doubt I could ever give it up - just because of all the memories it still holds.

Broken keys, missing keys, but the words are there and will be there forever, those written, the ones erased and the never wrote.
In the air will linger that Kentuky wiff from the poems that where churned out on an eternal youthful old thing.
Thanks for sharing.

Oh Joyce I could feel the disappointment and frustration through your words. Yet, you persevered and that is what counts, isn't it. You kept the type writer perhaps as a token of what once was and as a remembrance of how you refused to ever give up. What a wonderful piece of writing, I do admire you....

Be safe,
Karen

Oh dear ... I would bronze that old typewriter and put it on the mantle. Amen to never giving up on your dream. It is a struggle isn't it? So much comes against our gifts (especially if they are used for Christ) and the good we try to accomplish and share. And then if it does find some pinnacle of success then the system rats start to tear it apart.

You definitely were born with a call on your life dear Joyce. I imagine that the Holy Spirit spoke something over you in your mamas womb. It would account for your ability to connect with the hearts of so many. What a blessing this write was ...

Light and Wisdom and friendship and respect ....

You're singing to the choir, but you sing with us, too. We truly know how you feel. I have a double dose; like to talk and make speeches, the latter of which, my listeners have been spared for several years. You tell it well, and your friends appreciate you.

The mind creates what it conceives.

Your poem is a lovely inspirational story that can keep hope alive years later on other things you want or wish for.

I too wanted a typewriter in my youth for the same reason you had. Words have such tremendous power and I wanted to explore and learn while using them to unravel the mysteries of my unstructured thoughts.

When my mama gave me my typewriter for my birthday it was one of the greatest gifts ever given me. Perhaps it was the instigator for the books I've now written.

Joyce,

My Gift was given me by a loving God on 9/11. It's been worth the tears, the struggles, the lack of words prior. It saved my life.

Unfortunately, I did not have the benefits of being told I could be anything I wanted. You are blessed, as we are by your words and friendship. Well done.
