A few days ago I found a treasure in a second hand shop...an antique dresser set brush, hand mirror, and the matching shoe brush just like my mamaw's. The really amazing thing about my find is the letter B that is boldly engraved on each piece...a treasure meant for me to find. This treasure sparked my memories of playing dress up at my mamaw's dresser when I was a little girl. I hope you enjoy it...

I think of two of my grandmother's favorite fragrances from her Avon lady as a child--"Topaz" and "Persian Wood." And I too confess that I would play dress up with her "ear bobs" and her necklaces of imitation pearls that would fall past my waistline--I was a short kiddo--not to mention the boxed scented body powders and the big soft poofy (yep, said "poofy") puffs that if you put too much on made me look as if I was a snow bunny.

You know Sis. Joyce I thank you for this remembrance in verse.
Much love,
cynth'ya

I didn't touch anything, actually, but remember too my grandma's dresser with her 'feminine' things all over it. Those rooms were dark, too, cause of the winter or summer's hot sun.

Joyce, this poem have the quality to take the reader back in time, when his little girls discovered the Victorian screts of grandma's dresser, with wonderous things, brushes so soft that made them giggle, and powders, and ivory combs, and a gold framed crystal mirror...
Thanks!!!

Brava for making us see the glass and clouds of powder; lavender, if I'm not mistaken. Also love the colors in the mirror you kindly hold up. Nothing like a good grandmother! My mother's mother keeps surfacing in poems. Still see the doughnut-like"rat" she used to pull her hair through. She kept it in a silver. . .don't know what to call it. It was round and had a lid with fancy scrawls. I was so surprised when she undid her braids. Think I thought it came braided! The memories I have of her =- memories she gave me -- help push away the dark. Thanks for reminding me, Luv. And for all the thoughtful reviews!! Pea Hooluvzya

Joyce, I especially like your poem because it brought back similar memories for me of my mother. I still have the old hand-mirror she used daily when she still had goals and wanted to look her best. When she became bedridden, she refused to use the mirror again. Yet, it still represents a time of beauty in her life--and mine.

Great write. JC

Your poem is the magic weaving of another memory... for your grands and great grands. Just think, Mamaws all over the place, and sweet children to keep track of them. You've done your part, so sit back, smile, and know that you have found part of life's secret. - Bill
