As I sit here, I recall many years ago, when you came to my house,
walked up to my front door with my baby wrapped in a blanket.
As you knocked on my door, what could have been going through your mind?
How then, has the lady at the State Office label me as being....
A DEAD BEAT DAD?
Still, I must go on.
As I listened to those words from your lips,
"Here is your daughter, I can't take care of her".
I must confess at that moment, that word you spoke "can't".
How could that word even slip through your lips?
I know many women, who would do what ever it took to take care of their children rather they had one or six.
But, then again,
I say I was called....
A DEAD BEAT DAD?
I stood and watched you, as you walked to your car.
My thoughts quickly left you and I began to look down at my babe that lay wrapped in a blanket.
As I proceeded to enter my house.
I didn't wonder what do I do now?
I knew my life and my daughter's life
must go on.
I'll say it again,
Is this what you call....
A DEAD BEAD DAD?
I have to let you know because for some odd reason you have been struck with amnesia.
I took my baby in. I raised her, between my mother and I.
Does this make me....
A DEAD BEAD DAD?
When it was convenient to your lifestyle you would come and get her.
Not once did I reject, hey you are her mother.
But then you end up giving her right back to me.
I took my baby back into my home, I raised her, taught her how to be respectful,
I taught her about the all mighty God!
Again, I ask you
Is this....
A DEAD BEAD DAD?
I clothe her, fed her, she had everything she needed she was never hungry nor homeless.
My daughter was never dirty or nappy headed.
DEAD BEAT DAD, UM....
The funny thing is I never once asked you to supply anything, even though you never offered.
Hey, I didn't even go to the State on you.
I did what I needed to do....
But yet and still I have been labeled as....
A DEAD BEAD DAD?
Not that I had a problem financially taking care of my daughter.
I only wanted the best for her.
With two different lifestyles going on,
I knew where it was best for her to be.
I tell you does this sound like....
A DEAD BEAD DAD?
The hurting part is this, you know I have always been there for my daughter.
When you walked away as a mother, I was there to take care of her.
I don't understand how you allowed them to think I never did a thing,
when you know for a fact that between my mother and I she was covered.
We had her much longer than you.
We took care of her when you didn't want to or should I say didn't have the time to.
Is there a such thing as....
A DEAD BEAT MOM?
I want you to know that you never had to go to these diver limits.
If you had done things right my daughter would have been in your care and would have been taking care of by me, but you went behind my back and got the people on me.
Made it seem as if I never did a thing and you were always there.
God don't like ugly....
Yet and still....
I WANT TO KNOW!
Does this still title me to be....
A DEAD BEAT DAD!
You say that you care about the others I have, but how could you?
Your goal was to get whatever you could even if it meant someone else
would have to suffer!
A DEAD BEAD DAD....
No, I Don't Think So!!
This poem is dedicated to all the men who have falsely been labeled as....
DEAD BEAT DADS!
Maybe soon someone will listen to both sides and give an honest judgment.
