i'll try anything;-)lol

the dog, just a small mutt called risky
danced around almost doing pirouettes
wondering what it was that
his friend was getting into
risky wanted no part of it
and he didn't want his friend to, either

risky thought "if only I could talk
i'd tell them we'd rather walk"

there was a funny looking bird
spinning overhead
a person came out of it
with a big basket like a shopping cart
without wheels
now his best friend was getting into it

"oh no, what are you doing
i'm not getting in that thing"

risky was getting frisky, said woof
afraid they'd leave him alone on roof
his friend hushed him not to worry
he'd be going with them, risky thought
"no way will I get in that cage"
he began to howl like a wolf

"i don't care if they get mad
they are making me feel sad"

After strange man, got his friend settled
he reached over swooped risky with one hand
put him onto his friends lap
when the bird began to move
basket was climbing towards it
risky buried his head under friends armpit

"who does that guy think he is anyway
i'd like to bite him if i had my way"

While friend held him close murmuring
"shhh... we're okay now, soon we'll have food water, and a place to sleep that's safe"
risky licked his friends face and felt better
both of them were thankful to be together
even though risky couldn't look down

"he wondered where his buddies were
they wouldn't believe this bird, never"

we reached a place where the bird landed
my friend held onto me too tight
i tried to wriggle loose a little
almost fell out of his arms into the water
he got mad yelled and pinched my nose
doggone it that hurt, but i stayed still

"i didn't complain we were warm and dry
in someones van, going to a safe place nearby"

During Katrina I watched this scene unfold
on TV, of course I didn't know the dogs name
I once had a small terrier I named risky
so I used it for my poem and of course
I imagined the dog thinking these things
but the rest really did happen as I tell it...

any mistakes Jerry, sue me (don't even try ;-)
written in bed under foggy skies , misty eyes

I admire you for trying this, Eileen. It's a great story. When it comes to dogs, I just melt. Seeing all of those poor animals after Katrina just tore me up. I am so thankful for the organizations that are helping them. Surely hope you feel better soon. I don't know how you can write when you feel bad. Lots o' love, Janet

Sistah Girl, I so love this write of yours.
You know what pains me the most is that I was talking with a good friend today who said her brother and ex husband's homes along the gulf in Mississippi that were destroyed are needing help still. (And it's not black folks we're talking about. . . had to say that because the media makes a mess of any issue by tying in race to blow up the ratings.) People in need are people in need, and these people can't get the help they so desperately need. Things still need cleaning up! People are still homeless, but NOBODY wants to do it because they are not getting paid. So they are literally BEGGING for volunteers. And I get really peeved when I see silly silicone wanna be's like Pamela Anderson going to Frankfurt Kentucky (it's in front page news y'all) to sue KFC because she thinks a bust (yeah, BUST) of Harland Saunders, or is it Sanders, oh WHATever. . .should be taken out of the statehouse because of his cruelty to chickens. OH yes. CHICKENS!!! Bush's people, regardless of politics, need to be seeing about the folks who have lost homes in fires, and storms and, not to mention, bankruptcy due to lack of ability to make a decent living while all of our jobs go sailing sailing over the bounding main. So if you or anyone else reading this knows of a church group who understands that old phrase, "What would Jesus Do", I sure know what Jesus WOULDN'T do; he wouldn't sit around in a caucus meeting trying to decide what kind of pension they were going to get next year but would vote to have performance reviews of all congresspeople, AND the president, who ain't cuttin' the mustard for the people who put them in office.

And if folk can't be helped, where in the dickens is all that federal money and DONATIONS gone to; a resort condo project in the 9th ward of NOLA?

There, it's all out now. . . blessin's,
cynth'ya

Sweet story, Eileen and I saw some of those incredible rescues also. I didn't think that Jerry was proposing a challenge when I read his description of a septcouplet, but I am glad that you gave it a try. It seems a bit structured and perhaps a bit too long for me to do well at, but I will keep it on my desk of things to try in the future. I hope you will be well soon.
Take care,
Sherry

Excellent story poem in septcouplet style! I like reading these, it's easy on the eyes and it flows with rhythm. Jerry can teach us all a thing or two, and you can to, Eileen! Glad you risked it! Get well soon.

I know resting is pure boredom unless you read alot. So take it easy until you get better. Nice insightful write on what a dog might be thinking and yes I saw some of those rescues also.

A splendid composition in septcouplet style Eileen
, that makes you live again the huge operation that was mounted and is still under way to rescue all the animals that were marooned in the wake of Katrina !
Also made me think of the sterling efforts of fellow Den writer Ed Kostro, who is back down there in Louisana, along with others performing miracles for these poor, unfortunate creatures !
I hope you are beginning to recover from your illness !
God Bless
Peter

Hahaha!!! Don't worry, you did good, well, except for the rhyming couplets which is supposed have four sylabbles in each line. Like, maybe, instead of "who does that guy think he is anyway / I'd like to bite him if i had my way" to "who is that guy / I'll bite his thigh." Gotta love it, and I do, thank you for venturing where no one else has been brave enough to wander. Thank you.
