I saw you in the park today
On that hill where we used to lay
Cheering as children flew their kites
Watched their faces as they scaled heights

I saw you on the branberry  lake
Where in row boats we would take
Slow rides that lasted all day long
As we talked, loved, and sang our song

I saw you at the bandstand, where
Classical music was all  we would hear
We'd sit and listen by the hour
loving the feel of the orchestra's power

We were so full of our new found culture
Ready for college when  summer was over
pledging to stay true to each other forever
Believing this would be an easy endeavor

I saw you in the park today
The way it was before you went away
Instead of college you fought the latest  war
You were killed, now, I'll see you no more~~

i like how you developed this poem ... you create a real situation, expound its a memory of love and how it became a victim of war ... nice!

What would our lives be like without memories? How they define who we are and how we respond. Such a wealth of experience dwells in our gray matter.

You have a beautiful soul dear one and I always enjoy your constructs.

The internet in my area has had IBS for the last week. I hate when technology works against you.

An extremely sad and bittersweet poem, Tiger Lily. And very sadly, something many a forlorn sweetheart has experienced.

Eileen, thank goodness for our memories and the times we knew, and God bless us for the losses in our lives which we come through, a little less and a little more - a little less of our lives and a little more of compassion. Excellent write.

Peace. Joyce

This touched me into the place in my heart where unconditioned love dwells. There are places of the heart that never finish with love. Sadly Viet Nam took this part of my heart and placed a scar there.
Sad!! But very well written.

Eileen,
These are plain and poignant memories, as everlasting as they may seem to be, they are just as momentary as well. One moment he's here; the next he's not, just like the difference between alive and dead.
Beautiful words Eileen. I too expected a twist from you..lol..Not this time though. So I'll keep reading a few more years.

Sobering and plaintive words herein, Eileen, you paint a picture of love nipped in the bud by violence and man's folly. Good.

Eileen, i expected a twist or turn, but not the one you presented. You caught me off guard. You made me think beck to my first kiss. (blusing a little here)...I'll never forget it or later when I wrote a note to the same young man's mother in sympathy. He had just been taped for a TV documentary about helicopter pilots in war zones, but before it was aired, he was gone. Seems like yesterday.
Yep, you caught me...

Bittersweet lines that stand like a veritable monument to the twists and turns of love and fate. The heartbeat quickens with the joy and sorrow of remembrance here. Then it bows in silent respect.
