There's been too much silence
From my aunts and grandmothers,
Their voices muffled by the times
In which they lived,
And barely gleaned by my own.
Yet do they guide me,
These women of wisdom,
Through countless family stories
And their own recountings.
Tales of courage and hardship,
Of battles won and lost
In the open,
And behind closed doors.
They are my heroes,
Blood of my blood,
And their legacies demand an accounting:
What will I leave behind
To continue the saga?
