Of another barnyard
To treat a herd of cattle,
Or making rounds
Through the hospital barn
With its ark of patients:
Horses, goats, sheep, and pigs,
Maybe a llama or two,
Most ill tempered from suffering.
Dressed in coveralls
And rubber boots,
They often carry like badges
Smudges of mud and blood
And other things best ignored.
Personal discomfort, injury,
And even danger
Are a part of the job description;
But they love what they do,
For the satisfaction of healing
