An ode to my memories of Moyock, North Carolina, 1970.
Summer's long days
Arrived in the country
With sunny blue skies
And sultry air;
The county schools stand dormant, forlorn,
Their students eagerly dismissed
To chase butterflies,
Play ball,
And ride their bikes,
Or to play hide-and-seek
In the crisp white sheets
Hanging from the line,
Before being shooed
Away by their beleagured mothers,
Already eager
For Bible school to begin.
Beyond the yard,
Young crops grow in orderly rows
Tended in the distance
By the weathered farmer
With clouds of dust
Following in the wake
Of his trusty John Deere.
Except for the John Deare, this sounds familar.
Of course that was back in the ancient precomputer age
when one could have fun just kicking a ball or a can.
