I know the time is coming.

Silence:
It greets me
As I enter my house,
No quick patter
Of four feet hurrying
To welcome me home,
No happy barks,
No ecstatic wiggles,
Just an emptiness
And an open wound
Where my heart
Had been.
How long
Before I stop
Expecting to hear
The jingle
Of the tags
Hanging from your collar?
How long
Before I stop
Expecting you
To join me
On the couch
And on my bed?
After fifteen years
Of unconditional love
How can I face
The future without you?

This is so painful and poignant for me right now. My fourteen year old cat is in failing health, and I know the "decision" must come far too soon......well penned, Rebecca!
