When did I go from
Being a pain in my parents' ass
To having a pain in my own?
Few things so beautifully illustrate
The passage of time
In my life as
To go from amiable child
To rebellious teen,
And from rebellious teen
To befuddled adult,
Then, finally,
To this increasingly creaky
Older person
In middle middle age;
I look back and despair,
Where did the time go?
What legacy will I
Be leaving behind?
I've never married,
Never had children,
Never had any career
To speak of,
So what has been the point
Of my existence?
While looking ahead
And seeing the vast possibilies
Remaining in
My future's blankness,
I ruminate on the past.
Perhaps I have left
Some sweetness
In the memories of my friends,
And some hope in the hearts
Of the children I've sponsored;
Perhaps I've given good lives
To the pets that have graced
My own,
And, maybe, just maybe,
I've left only footprints
And no carnage
In my wake.
Can we really ask so much more
In each of our lives?
Ambition is all well
And good,
And should not be underestimated
In its power
To improve one's lot,
But, in the end,
What will we really be leaving behind
When our time finally comes?
The sensible musings of a person ready to take stock of one's life. We should all do it from time to time as you have done Rebecca. It forces us to look at our lives and see what we have accomplished, in the past, but also for the future that ever lies in front of it. Honest and heart-felt.
You will be leaving trails and trails of friends, of laughter, and tears. There will be many peaks and valleys when your heart soared and when it was ripped apart by thoughtless people. You will also see those places where you got back on your feet, dusted yourself off, and moved on--slowly at first, and then with a faster pace. You will know those places where you simply excelled and nobody was looking. When you kissed a set of lips and set a soul on fire. You will never know all the ripples and ripples of goodwill that began with you and will go on for eternity. You will also never know the hearts that you have touched, the anxieties you qualmed, or the futures you set into motion. You won't know a life well-lived until it has ended and you are among the angels, and you know you are home.
