Tonight as I
Bowed under the weight
Of sorrows that seemed
Too heavy to bear
I recounted in my mind
My each and every hurt,
Each and every pain,
Each and every disillusionment.
I questioned God
Why?
Why have I had
To endure so much?
Why have I lost so much
In the course of my life?
I was edging toward
A bout with self pity
When a gentle reproof
Wafted through my mind:
Images of war torn lands
And the mean streets of
Our own cities,
The peoples,
The children,
With no homes,
No food,
Very little water,
And absolutely no
Sense of security;
And I am reminded
Of how much I truly have.
Yes, I've hurt,
Yes, I've suffered,
But I have a roof over my head,
A warm bed to sleep in,
More food than I need,
Plenty of clean water
To drink and in which
To bathe,
And the knowledge that
It will probably all be here
Tomorrow,
A tomorrow, though not promised,
Will most likely arrive
In the very next moment.
I have so much to be
Thankful for,
And I thank God
For reminding me of it.
