In memory of my mom, Shirley Ann Frye Russell. Miss you.

Just when I thought
I knew it all
I grew up!
I grew up and discovered
The world was much more
Difficult
Than I ever thought
It could be,
Much more complex,
Much more
Not about me.
It was such
A bitter pill
To realize that
Maybe
My parents had been right
After all
When advising me
And attempting
To guide me
Through dangerous waters.
They couldn't save me
From all the angst
And hurts
Of my childhood
And arrogant teens,
But I can now appreciate
All of their wisdom
And their sacrifices,
And the emotional pain
I must certainly have
Put them through.
I have never had
Children of my own
So it's taken me longer
To gain some understanding
Of what it must be like
To parent
And I've come to question
If I would have had half
Of the dedication
And toughness
As they.

My parents. Of the two my dad was the "good" one, mother a tryant. Even so, I learned from them both I found out in my later years. Enjoyed this immensely.

I like your postive better than your down side, but I guess that is true for all of us. When it's about gratitude, it's a lot better. Keep up the good writing.

I'm sorry that you had to go through this to arrive at the conclusion of this poem. My mother is still alive and hanging on, although about a year ago she gave up trying to call me because her phone changed again and it didn't work for her this time. (She instructed me not to try to call her because she couldn't get to the phone and pick it up in any reasonable time)

But my childhood was wonderful and my parents were the best. The next thing they did was allow me to roam and learn on my own lessons early that made me able to leave home at 18 confident that I could make it on my own without their help. My father gave me some bad advice and was skeptical of much of what I did, but he was bragging about me behind the scenes for what I did do away from him. My mother was always steadfast behind me. Something wonderful to have regardless of what happens.

You captured the evolution of a child growing up perfectly. The circle of life continues.

Dear Rebecca,
This is a very precious poem that took a lot of courage to share.
No parents are completely perfect. My parents were both good and bad.
My mother was a saint to me; my father was very contradictory. They raise me though many trails of pain, sorrow, joy and victory. I pressed on and raised wonderful children who are a integral part of me. I will never regret going though all of that. Still, I know am flawed as a dad but have good traits under my hat. Both my kids rebelled as teens, and sometimes made a scene. Now, they have become even better parents than my wife and me. I look forward to the great-grand kids, I have yet to see! So here is a life-cycle of parental skills that improved over the years. From the little piece of your life that you have shared with me. I can vision a fantastic bride-to be. Have a GREAT Thanksgiving and save some turkey for___! LOL

Beautifully expressed. No one can replace a parent and they are forever missed.
