Two rivers flowing
From a common source,
Never so far
From one another
That birds
Could not beckon
On the wing.
For eons the rivers meandered,
Following their own beds
Over rocks and through
Placid waters,
With the occasional stream
Connecting them
And their feathered friends
Conveying
A message or two
Along the way.
Then came the day
One river rounded
A sharp bend,
Repelled by who knows what,
And was soon beyond
The reach
Of the birds.
The second river was
Confused,
Did not understand
And could not comprehend
The sudden loss of one
Who had been their companion
For so long;
But time and
A river's flow
Go on,
So, sadly,
The second river
Continued
It's meandering course
Over rocks and
Through placid waters,
Ever hopeful a passing bird
Might bring familiar greetings
Once more.
