i researched my family's genealogy for several decades and maintained five family trees on a genealogy site i had taken several lines back to the 700's before i stopped looking farther. we are in part where we came from, and as Michael said it is up to us where we take that moving into our own futures.
And it goes way back beyond comprehension, like infinity. Just who were the first couple 1000 generations ago. Mind-boggling. It is so important to get it right. I am upset when I hear people say they don't care, just looking forward to their children. But you are right, we are what we are from our ancestors. Knowing them will help us know ourselves.
I was surprised, when my mother wrote a quick genealogy for a niece of mine who wrote her to ask, when she got my great-grandfather and my great-great-grandfather on my father's side mixed up. Something she rarely did, make mistakes like that. I hope my niece knows of the error. But my brother and a cousin have done an extensive search and our genealogy is fairly well-known.
