They sat side by side

What a wonderful way to learn music. From your own grandmother while your mother looked on. I know this is from your experience and very true to it.
Both of my grandmothers told me that they had learned to play the piano "by ear." It was a common way for people in those days we had a lot of time on their hands and an instrument to experiment with. My dad claimed to have learned several instruments, also by ear.
I learned a lot from my grandmothers when I stayed with them, but not how to play the piano. They both could sing along with what they were playing and the whole family would gather around that Thanksgiving and Christmas to sing to someone playing the piano.
The discovery of a singing voice in a child is a miracle to witness and listen to. As a young child, I was a member of the boy's choir at a local church and with a wonderful boy soprano voice, I was choden to sing the solos during Sunday Mass. It was quite daunting but I did it, and still remember the glorious feeling of the human voice singing sacred music that soared into the heavens.
